Grimsay wheelhouse
This wheelhouse is probably the best example visible of an Iron Age wheelhouse on the islands. Excavated by an amateur in the 1990s, some elements are reconstructed but the feel of a wheelhouse is there.
Occupation continued into the Norse period with various artifacts from that period also unearthed during the excavation.
The image above is a photogrammetric model created on an ACCORD workshop.

The grid reference is NF 86655737.
Access is easiest from the west with the car best parked just as the road leaves the shore. Please respect the privacy of those who live in the house there. Keep Loch Hornaraigh on your right and then after a dip in the ridge, you will be there. More details can be found on Canmore here although this site has much more detail on this wheelhouse and others. |
