Caisteal Odair
This is another remote site on the NW corner of North Uist described in Canmore as a promontory fort. The headland is almost cut off by the wall and at the W end there are several large slabs. Almost reminiscent of a chambered cairn?!
The Old Norse kastali Óðr, Odir's castle, is one possible meaning of the name, after Odir a mythogical Norseman. A simpler suggestion is kastala oddr meaning point of the castle.

The grid reference is NF 73157680.
The site is best accessed from the Griminish end. Follow the directions for Foshigarry and then keep following the coast west. Please use the gates rather than climb any fences. The cliffs at the headland are steep and often slippery so please do keep a safe distance from the edge. The Canmore details are here. |
